One of the biggest underdog stories in recent memory played out brilliantly in the main event of ONE Fight Night 9 this past Friday, April 21, but Jonathan Haggerty wasn’t the only athlete who pulled off an incredible upset.

All three of the night’s muay Thai bouts saw the favorites emphatically fall, helping to create an unforgettable night of action.

Here are the three underdogs that stole the show at the iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

1. Jonathan Haggerty

Haggerty’s main event boilover was one for the ages.

“The General” crushed longtime ONE bantamweight muay Thai world champion Nong-O Hama, knocking down the living legend three times inside the very first round.

Haggerty, who entered the contest at No. 5 in the rankings, was the last remaining top-5 contender for Nong-O to beat for him to clear out the division. However, the British superstar wasn’t about to be another number in the Thai icon’s historic promotional run.

Nong-O was looking for his 11th straight win, but the former flyweight king denied him to become the latest two-division ONE world champion. The 26-year-old Brit also took home a $100,000 performance bonus for his thrilling win, courtesy of ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.

2. Felipe Lobo

Top-ranked bantamweight muay Thai contender Saemapetch Fairtex was supposed to punch his ticket to a world title showdown with Nong-O at ONE Fight Night 9, but Felipe Lobo had other ideas.

The Brazilian striker knocked Saemapetch out in the third round, using a flurry of heavy punches to shut down the aggressive Thai star.

The victory netted the unranked Lobo a $50,000 performance bonus and more importantly, it thrusts him straight into the now wide open ONE bantamweight muay Thai world title picture.

3. Asa Ten Pow

After suffering a first-round TKO loss in his promotional debut, Asa Ten Pow had drawn a tough assignment in his sophomore ONE appearance.

Former world title challenger Han Zi Hao was a warm favorite heading into his 13th promotional outing, but the 33-year-old was unfazed, as he took out his Chinese rival with a third-round TKO.

“The American Ninja” survived an early scare in the catchweight muay Thai showdown, as he absorbed a sharp left hook that sent him briefly to the canvas. But Ten Pow came alive after the referee’s count, unloading power shots to become the first man to finish Han.

The end came less than a minute into the final round, as Ten Pow pulled off the first of what would prove to be a night of upsets.
