Earlier this week, ONE Championship co-founder Hua Fung Teh spoke of the promotion’s plans to expand further following the rousing success of its historic debut show in the United States on May 5.

ONE Fight Night 10 lit up Denver, Colorado’s 1STBANK Center and entertained a sold-out crowd with a scintillating card topped by Demetrious Johnson‘s epic trilogy victory over arch-rival Adriano Moraes.

Appearing on CNBC’s “Street Signs,” Hua hailed the blockbuster event and said it has paved the way for an increased presence in the United States.

“We had our first U.S. event in Denver, Colorado, a month before the Nuggets won the NBA championship, so it was great timing,” he quipped.

“It was a sold-out event. It broke records in the U.S. and on our streaming platform Amazon Prime Video. I think the event really, sort of, showed us that we not only have a right to play, but we have a clear right to win in the U.S. So, we are going to be having more events in the U.S. next year, and we’re also looking to expand our partnership with Amazon.”

While ONE has long enjoyed a strong foothold in Asia, its global expansion has largely exceeded expectations.

That success hasn’t come as a surprise to the ONE brass, however. As Hua explains, combat sports have a universal appeal, providing limitless opportunities for sports properties such as ONE to grow its audience.

“To be honest, it’s not that surprising. Martial arts have been practiced by many people around the world. It is from Asia, but you walk around the streets of New York, London, Doha – where I was at last week – and you will see a martial arts gym, a kickboxing school, you will see a karate or judo dojo, right?” the Group ONE Holdings president said.

“So, martial arts are enjoyed and practiced by many people around the world. While we’re based in Asia, it’s no surprise that we’re expanding in the U.S., the Middle East, Europe and Africa, many parts of the world.”
