Jordan Parsons was a promising professional MMA fighter, training at Blackzilians, and fighting successfully in Bellator MMA. Then on May 10, 2016, he was hit by an SUV, driving at a reported 100-120 miles per hour. There is CCTV footage of vehicle driving far too fast.

The driver, who was drunk, sped away, went to his condo, went to sleep, and days later tried to hide the vehicle in a storage unit. Parsons had his leg amputated, and after several days, he passed away from the injuries sustained. He was 25 years old.

The driver, Dennis Michael Wright, pleaded guilty earlier this month this month. On Wednesday morning he was sentenced to ten years in prison by circuit court judge Laura Johnson. When his decade of incarceration has ended, he will be on probation for another decade, during which he is forbidden to drinking alcohol, is required to undergo substance-abuse treatment, and must carry an image of Parson on his person at all times.

This was one of the most callous and wanton acts I have ever seen,” said the judge to Wright, 31. I hope you think of Mr. Parsons every day you’re in prison.”

There is scant justice in the justice system, but this one feels just.

Parson’s mother Anna Marlen also addressed the court.

“I got to see his first breath, she said, adding that she could not bear to see his last in the hospital.

She mourns her son and as well she is mourning his hopes and dreams and goals.

For two years she has been writing a statement to the court but, consumed with grief, I couldn’t find the words to explain Jordan’s death. … Every cell in my body aches. I won’t smile as often as my old self. Smiling hurts. Most everything hurts.
