Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat is one of the most celebrated themes in all sports, although there are so many to choose from, let’s take a look at 3 of the most thrilling comebacks in MMA history.

3) Frank Mir vs Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira 2

After becoming the first person to KO ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira, the former UFC Champion would meet his rival again at UFC 140. After being dazed with elbows, Nogueira dropped Mir with a right hand and transitioned to a guillotine in an attempt to give him his first submission loss. In survival mode Mir managed escape the choke, scramble to side control and catch Nogueira’s left arm in a kimura. In an intense comeback Mir proceeded to snap Nogueira’s arm becoming the first man to both KO and submit the Brazilian legend.

2) Scott Smith Pete Sell

Both contestants on The Ultimate Fighter 4: Comeback, Scott Smith and Pete Sell put their friendship on hold for their matchup on the 11th November 2006. After a thrilling first round that saw Sell get dropped, he rallied back in round two connecting with a devastating left hook to the body causing Smith to grimace in pain. Smelling blood he rushed in to finish Smith only to be caught by a right cross out of nowhere giving Scott Smith the KO victory, and that night the ‘The Comeback Kid’ was born.

1) Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen 1

At UFC 117 it looked like Chael Sonnen was going to achieve the unthinkable and wrestle the middleweight title back to Oregon. Over four and half rounds he took down ‘The Spider’ at will, as well as dropping him with strikes and backing up every word he said for months leading up to the contest. But Sonnen’s long-time Achilles’ heel reared its ugly head as Silva miraculously submitted him with a triangle armbar in the last few minutes of round five, narrowly avoiding a decision loss and defending his title for the seventh time.
