Every since a former Miss Teen Calfornia and Taekwondo black belt posted a video of her kicking a water bottle off a bag and then out the air, the trick has gone viral. Hundreds more martial artists posted themselves doing the same trick. We think Olivia Marie was the first though.
Experimentation is important in martial arts, but this change in the water bottle trick was not wise. There is a reason that post people do the trick using a soft bag to launch the water bottle into the air.
The trick is fairly simple, but it can be done a few different ways. The most common is to place the water bottle on top of a free standing heavy bag. Then a simple hard round house kick will cause the water bottle to pop up into the air, allowing the martial artist time to set up another kick. Another round house kick could be thrown, but to add some flair most perform some variation of a wheel kick.
The trick requires good technique on your wheel kick, but also good timing. It seems as though most martial artist posting videos of the trick have a taekwondo background which is a martial art that focuses on kicks.
ABOUT TAEKWONDO
Taekwondo (/ˈtaɪˈkwɒnˈdoʊ/) is a Korean martial art with a heavy emphasis on kicks. Taekwondo was developed during the 1940s and 1950s by various Korean martial artists as a blend of the indigenous Korean fighting styles of taekkyeon, gwonbeop, and subak, with influence from foreign martial arts, such as karate and Chinese martial arts.
The oldest governing body for Taekwondo is the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA), formed in 1959 by a collaborative effort by representatives from the nine original kwans, or martial arts schools, in Korea. The main international organizational bodies for Taekwondo today are the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), founded by General Choi Hong Hi in 1966, and the World TaeKwonDo Federation (WTF), founded in 1973 by the KTA. Gyeorugi ([kj ʌɾuɡi]), a type of full-contact sparring, has been an Olympic event since 1992. The body known for taekwondo in the Olympics is the World TaeKwonDo Federation.
