Seven year old gets bit during wrestling match and handles it gracefully.

It looks like both competitors broke the rules a few times during this folkstyle wrestling match. One of them (Billy) can be seen performing illegal headlocks (without an arm included) and a few times he locked his hands together. (technical violation in folkstyle) In folkstyle, you can only lock hands when both wrestlers are on their feet or when one wrestler is hooking up a pinning combination.

Billy’s opponent can be seen hitting, headbutting, and biting throughout the match. We’re not sure why the ref didn’t do anything about any of it.

This win was for his gram. Billy beat this kid after the kid punched, bit, and head butted, but didn’t help him at all; Bill dominates this kid. Way to wrestle, Bill… Even though he left with bite marks on his thigh. [source : original video description]

There’s nothing like the elated feeling your children get after winning a game they’ve practiced for day and night. But that good feeling can quickly dissipate when faced with bad sportsmanship.

Youth sports are a great opportunity for kids to build self-esteem and learn the essentials of playing a game. But it’s also an opportunity for parents and coaches to teach the importance of good sportsmanship. While parents cheer for their kids on the sidelines, it’s also imperative for them to be positive role models and strong examples of what it means to be a good sport.

Our kids look to their role models, and when adults and athletes have a win-at-all-cost mentality, it can ruin the game and bring out the worst in everyone.

Wrestle with integrity. One of the most essential lessons a child can learn from sports is to follow the rules. Make sure your child understands the rules and doesn’t break them, even if they have the opportunity to get away with it. [teamusa .org]
