A Walgreens employee was successfully able to defend himself against a criminal who attacked him earlier this month thanks to his martial arts skills.

The incident took place at a branch of Walgreens in the early hours of July 4th, and was captured on the store’s CCTV.

The footage begins with a male in a black shirt and jeans lurking near a counter in the store. A bald-headed employee wearing a blue shirt approaches him, and after a brief conversation the man walks away.

However, 30 seconds later he returns in a more aggressive manner and suddenly lunges at the employee.

The employee appears to have been anticipating the attack though, and so he immediately springs into action, unleashing a combination of punches straight down the pipe that knocks the criminal to the floor.

The employee then stands over him and rains down ground and pound strikes.

He begins remonstrating with the man as a female employee arrives on the scene and calls police.

Just at that moment the troublemaker gets to his knees and tries to stand back up, so the employee shows his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills as he takes his back, correctly applies a rear-naked choke and rolls, while sinking in his hooks to keep him firmly in place.

Soon after the man is seen frantically tapping on his arm in an attempt to submit to the choke.

The employee loosens his grip after a few seconds, but then reapplies the choke to keep him under control.

As demonstrated here, jiu-jitsu is a powerful martial art in a 1 vs. 1 situation, but applying a submission hold on the ground can leave you vulnerable when there’s more than one attacker present.

Unfortunately, that’s the scenario that plays out here as the criminal’s friend suddenly shows up and attempts to intervene, forcing the employee to let go of the choke.

The two goons then start to attack him, but he’s able to get back to his feet relatively unscathed and then chooses the best self-defense strategy under the circumstances and runs away.

Thankfully the men don’t chase after him, though one of them does attempt to launch a phone in his direction, not realizing that it’s attached to the table by a cord!

All in all the employee did a very good job of defending himself here, from the initial knockdown, to the choke hold, and then successfully extracting himself from the situation when it got out of control.
