In this video, two of the UFC’s Octagon girls volunteered to help demonstrate some self-defense techniques as part of an anti-bullying initiative.

Leading the demonstration was Ricky Manetta, who is one of the UFC’s head-coordinators for logistics and security during their international shows.

However, Manetta is also the founder of what he calls, ‘MMA Krav Maga’, a hybrid of mixed martial arts and the hand-to-hand combat system used by the Israeli Defense Force.

He’s also a self-defense instructor, and on this occasion, he enlisted the help of Octagon girls Carly Baker and Kristie Pearson to demonstrate how to break free if someone grabs your arm.

Hailing from England, Baker was the UFC’s first ever European Octagon girl and has been seen regularly at their international shows over the past four years. She’s also a model and in the past was a singer with the short-lived girl group SW1.

Australian-born fitness model Pearson first appeared as an Octagon girl in 2012 and has also now a regular fixture at the UFC’s overseas shows, in addition to being married to UFC fighter, Ross Pearson.

In the video Manetta shows how it’s possible to break free from even a two-handed grip on your arm using some simple techniques that don’t require brute strength.

Manetta describes how to rotate your wrist so that the thinnest part of your wrist is aligned with the weakest part of your assailant’s grip where the thumb and finger touch.

From there you have a much better chance of breaking free, but you can break the grip easier by bending your elbow towards the assailant’s forearm while grabbing your trapped hand with your other hand and pulling can also aid your escape.

Manetta notes that you can also use your free arm to land punches to the face or eye-pokes to fend off your attacker.
