When you think of street altercations scenarios chances are you picture two dudes throwing haymakers at each other. More often than not though, street altercations eventually end up on the ground, and it’s where submissions come in play. Submissions can target all limbs, and even put you to sleep. To say that they’re a very effective street self-defense tool would be an understatement.
Have a look at the top 5 submissions used in street self-defense scenarios.
5) The arm triangle (Arm choke / arm triangle)
The arm triangle choke is a rather tricky chokehold to pull off but if you know what you’re doing it can be pretty effective. This choke is performed by trapping an opponent’s arm between your arm and his own neck, and pushing your shoulder down towards his trapped arm. As with every choke it can be used as a devastating weapon.

4) The armbar (Armbar)
Ah, the straight armbar. One of the most used submissions in MMA competition, and a staple for any ground fighter out there. MMA superstar Ronda Rousey recently showed the world how armbars can be pretty effective. It’s a rather easy submission to pull off, hence why many street fights have ended due to an armbar being applied.

3) The triangle choke (Triangle)
The triangle choke is another submission that is commonly pulled off in MMA competition. It can be really useful if you happen to find yourself with your back on the ground. Most people don’t know how to escape it, thus making it a dangerous submission for whoever finds himself/herself trapped in it.

2) The guillotine choke (Guillotine)
The guillotine choke is particularly handy if an opponent happens to shoot for a classic double-leg takedown. It can be performed both standing or on the ground. If you know what you’re doing, a guillotine choke can be very difficult to escape from.

1) The rear naked choke (RNC)
The rear naked choke is a pretty versatile and relatively easy-to-pull-off submission, hence why it’s commonly used in street self-defense scenarios. This chokehold aims to restrict blood flow to the brain via the carotid arteries; you can see how dangerous and effective it is. It can put an opponent away in matter of seconds. Held longer, it can even become deadly.
