When compared to other combat sports, in mixed martial arts there are not only many more ways to win but also many more ways to lose. Even at the highest levels of the sport, very successful and elite fighters have made some terrible errors in judgement which resulted in humiliating defeats.
Losing always sucks but when a loss is caused by a big mistake instead of just being out performed it’s got to sting that much more.
5) Michael Bisping fails to defend himself at all times against Anderson Silva
This was a surprisingly rookie mistake from such a veteran fighter like Bisping. When Bisping’s mouth guard came out he looked to referee Herb Dean to stop the action but instead Anderson took full advantage and delivered a brutal flying knee at the end of the round. Bisping was luckily able to survive and ended up pulling off the victory in a razor thin decision despite making such a rookie mistake that nearly cost him the fight.

4) Fedor Emelianenko goes to the ground with Fabricio Werdum
Usually in a MMA fight if you are on top you are winning. Against Fabricio Werdum though that’s not necessarily true. Known for having one of the best guards in MMA, Werdum was able to quickly submit the legendary Fedor with a triangle/armbar after being followed to the ground.

3) Chris Weidman’s wheel kick attempt on Luke Rockhold
In what started out as a pretty evenly matched title bout, it quickly went awry for Weidman after he attempted a very poorly thought out spinning wheel kick. This is a pretty advanced kicking technique usually performed by those with a traditional martial arts background and Chris’ technique with it was not up to par. Chris was also way too close to his opponent to attempt this technique and it led to him being taken down which was the beginning of the end for him.

2) Anderson Silva clowning against Chris Weidman
This was a very bizarre fight where Anderson got carried away and was caught clowning around with a big punch that knocked him out. Though Anderson was losing prior to his clowning, who knows how this fight would have gone had Anderson not fooled around? This fight ended the reign of one of the greatest fighters ever in humiliating fashion and Anderson hasn’t performed the same ever since.

1) Hello Japan
This one takes the cake for the biggest blunder in an MMA fight and has got to be one of the most embarrassing losses in MMA ever. This fight featured American David Gardner taking on submission wiz Shinya Aoki and when Aoki was on Gardner’s back instead of worrying about defending the choke, Gardner decided to wave to the camera and famously say Hello Japan! Shinya quickly took advantage of this lapse of judgement and locked in the rear naked choke, forcing Gardner to tap out in a humiliating defeat.
