Revered martial arts star Jet Li has graced the screens for over thirty years, so let’s look at five facts you may not know about the Chinese superstar.
5) Personal bodyguard for US President Richard Nixon?
In 1974 the Chinese National Wushu Team travelled to the United States and performed for President Richard Nixon, who then asked Li to be his personal bodyguard to which replied, “I don’t want to protect any individual. When I grow up, I want to defend my one billion Chinese countrymen!”

4) 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake
Li was present in Maldives when it was struck by a Tsunami during the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Although reports online stated that he had died in the tragedy, he had only suffered a minor foot injury which was caused by a piece of floating furniture. Li was ushering his then 4 year old daughter Jane and the nanny who had his then 1 year old daughter Jada away from danger.

3) Film debut in 1979
Li made his film debut in 1979 in the movie The Shaolin Temple, where he plays the son of a slave worker who escaped and sought refuge in the Shaolin Temple but was murdered. Li’s character then must master his Kung Fu to avenge his father’s death. This film was loosely based on a true story.

2) Humble beginnings
Li began learning the martial arts at the age of eight. Despite the struggle he and his family went through after his father’s death, Li’s determination leads him to win his first national championship in Wushu at age 11.


1) British Prime Minister Tony Blair and charity work
In 2009 Li teamed up with then British Prime Minister Tony Blair to launch their Thousand Village Project which deals sought to bring renewable energy to village homes and spread awareness and education to the public regarding the use of solar energy and its role to combat climate change.
