There has always been a long standing debate of whether or not traditional martial arts are practical in real life situations. The concern is a valid one indeed; why would someone spend so much time, energy, and money training and perfecting a craft that has no real life benefit?

It is widely known that any type of training is better than no training and there is a debate raging within the martial arts community as to which is best however; to see true martial arts used in a street situation is not only unique but just goes to prove what martial artist have been saying for centuries…that traditional martial arts techniques are the most practical and useful form of self-defense.

Check out the videos below to see three occasions where martial arts were used to kick ass in the streets!

3) Effective Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

In the video below we see an altercation that is the result of an argument on the basketball court. After the black guy takes a swing at the white guy, the fight quickly goes to the ground where the white guy clearly has an understanding of BJJ. He quickly moves to the back mount position where after trying to secure a choke some bystanders intervene at which point the martial artist seamlessly transitions from one submission attempt to another.

Although he did not technically win the fight in the traditional sense, the BJJ practitioner adequately defended himself, kept the attacker from doing any damage and de-escalated the situation.

2) Taekwondo KO

In the short video below we see just how effective the kicks of the Korean martial art Taekwondo can be. Although only 15 seconds and one strike in duration, it is very clear to see how devastating a spinning heel kick can be. Taekwondo has traditionally been greatly criticized as being impractical in real life situations however; I would venture to say with certainty that the man on the receiving end of this kick would beg to differ.

1) The devastation of Judo

In the video below we see just how devastating, brutal, and practical the art of Judo can be. What we are witnessing is a technique known as seoi nage which is one of the traditional forty Judo throws developed by its founder, Jigoro Kano. In a display of just how effective the throw is; it can be seen below in a self-defense situation that is all too common: a woman having to defend herself against a larger and more powerful man.
