Fighting in the street is always a very dangerous situation it is should always be avoided at all costs. Anything could happen – you could get seriously hurt or on the other hand you can even seriously hurt someone else over what is usually a trivial matter and it should only be done in self-defense as a last resort.

In a street or self-defense situation though, the worst position to be in is of course on the ground with one or more guys stomping and kicking you. In this video from Raw Combat International we get some tips from self-defense expert Luke Holloway on how to survive this dangerous situation.

“My first priority would be to get up but before that even you’ve got to protect yourself,” Luke says. He also goes over that while your first instinct in that position may be to turn away from the attacker, you actually want to turn into him, all while blocking. This way you can look to grab a leg and take him down, essentially turning the tables.

Once you are on top Luke says it’s important to go right into a dominant position like mount or side mount. From there it’s much easier to do damage compared to being stuck in your opponent’s guard if the guy knows what he’s doing.

Also Luke makes sure to note that while fighting back is important in this situation the most important thing here and in any kind of self-defense situation is to look to escape and get out of there while you can.

Towards the end of the video, he also shows an alternate version of defending yourself when your legs are towards you opponent where you can deflect the incoming strikes with your feet and then even look to wrap him up with your legs with a trip and take him down that way.
