Although these days most people would associate Brazilian Jiujitsu in a sporting context such as grappling tournaments or mixed martial art competition, it is first and foremost a self-defense system that has always prided itself on being able to defeat the largest and most aggressive of adversaries with correct technique and leverage.

But how do you figure out which moves to take from your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu game and add into your self-defense arsenal?

In the following tutorial video, Grapplearts.com founder and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Stephan Kesting goes through what he feels it the most important Jiu Jitsu technique for self-defense, in this instance the arm-drag to rear naked choke combination.

“I’ve had friends who are cops and bouncers who have used it effectively and I have used it effectively on the mats.”

Throughout the lesson Stephan will demonstrate the basic technique, how to flow seamlessly from one technique to the next, breaking the opponent’s posture as well as effectively finishing the submission without having to go down to the ground.
