Martial arts training scenes, also sometimes known as montages when there’s music attached, were pretty common in the martial arts films of the 80s but are seldom seen nowadays.
They added a cool element to the film that showed many of us the value of hard work as well as the power of determination in order to overcome obstacles.
The scenes depicted in these martial arts films also may have inspired us to either start training in martial arts or to just get off the coach and start working out.
4) Rocky 4
Though many do not consider Rocky 4 a martial arts film, boxing is most definitely a martial art and perhaps more effective than many traditional arts out there. The Rocky series really started the whole ‘training montage’ trend and while the first one was most certainly the best, the fourth of the series certainly had the most epic training scene.

3) Kickboxer
1989’s Kickboxer starring legend Jean Claude Van-Damme was perhaps one of the greatest martial arts films ever. It told the story of Kurt Sloane was travelled to Thailand to train in the art of Muay Thai to avenge his brother’s devastating injuries caused by bad guy Tong Po. The training scene even depicted Jean Claude demolishing a banana tree with his kicks which has since became a meme of its own.
2) Karate Kid
The Karate Kid starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita is probably THE greatest martial arts film ever made. The subsequent ones were okay but the first was an amazing film. It depicted Daniel San using karate to beat his bullies at their own game. His trainer, Mr. Miyagi, used unconventional methods of training including the ‘wax on wax off’ method which taught Daniel San basic karate techniques without him even knowing it.

1) Bloodsport
What made the training scene in Bloodsport a little different is that it took place in the past in a flashback type scene showing how Jean Claude’s character of Frank Dux got to his current skill set. Much like in other films, his character’s instructor used unconventional methods of training, but they sure payed off later on in the kumite.
