There are many martial arts out there that focus on knife and gun defense and disarms. From self-defense martial arts such as krav maga and systema to even traditional martial arts like karate, they all usually have a portion of their training dedicated to the defense against weapons.

While it certainly is beneficial to practice some of these techniques in case you ever have to use them, it is also possible for them to do more harm than good. When someone has a knife or gun and you do not, you’ve got to think your best move is going to be an evasive maneuver unless there is absolutely no other choice.

Someone with a knife is obviously going to have a huge advantage over someone unarmed. However, when both parties have weapons that is where technique and training is going to be the difference maker.

When it comes to knife fighting martial arts, the most well known are the Filipino martial arts such as eskrima and kali. The problem with knife fighting training though is it is hard to replicate the danger and stress of a real life knife battle with plastic knives.

Enter the shock knife that we see implemented in the following video. Early in the clip we see them training with a variety of different training knives and we see how that affects them. When they are hitting each other with plastic knives there is no danger so making contact isn’t a big deal.

About 2 minutes into the video they bring out the shock knives and they might be one of the coolest training implements out there.

You can really see the difference in their movements when they are using the shock knives. They are much more apprehensive and defensive minded because obviously they don’t want to get shocked! This makes for much more realistic knife defense training that would be more applicable in a real life self-defense situation.
