In his latest bite-sized ‘Gracie Breakdown’ segment, highly regarded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert Rener Gracie breaks down a recent street fight video that shows a teenager being choked unconscious.

Gracie begins the video by explaining why he believes that these kind of street fight videos are actually a valuable training tool, even if the combatants are untrained.

99% of Jiu-Jitsu students train 99% of their training time preparing for someone who know Jiu-Jitsu, Gracie said.

The problem is that 99% of street fights are going to be against someone who does not do Jiu-Jitsu and therefore does not follow the same behavioral patterns.

So, watching two untrained people get into a street fight is very educational for this purpose, because you can see what to expect from an untrained street opponent.

The video shows two youths fighting outside a shop, with one of them landing some punches and then locking in a guillotine choke when his rival stoops down for what would prove to be a failed takedown attempt.

As Gracie notes, the individual, has no training, he’s just ripping on his neck, in an instinctive fashion, perhaps mimicking what he’s seen in MMA fights, and that’s something we’re seeing more and more often in this day and age as the sport continues to grow in popularity around the globe.

Despite the lack of finesse, the choke is successful, with his opponent slumping to the ground unconscious after he’s let go, leaving the victim in a vulnerable position.

In a street fight getting choked unconscious can be the same as death, because you don’t know what’s going to happen to you after they release your neck, and if your unconscious you can’t defend yourself from him or his friends, Gracie notes.

Thankfully, on this occasion the victim isn’t harmed after the choke and appeared to be ok, though it could easily have been a lot worse due to they way he fell backwards after being let go.

As the head instructor at the world-famous Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Rener advises learning BJJ, where you would learn ways to defend a choke like this, and even turn the situation to your advantage – especially against an untrained opponent.

Of course, even if you do know Jiu-Jitsu, the best advice in a situation like this would be to avoid getting into the fight in the first place if you possibly can.
