Although the martial arts are heavily associated with a sporting context, it is important to keep in mind the self defense aspect of martial arts as fighting in the gym and fighting in the street do present some key differences.
But if you’re just starting out and have absolutely no knowledge of the world of martial arts, how do you know which style is most suitable for you to train in for the purpose of real world self defense, since virtually every martial arts school claims that they teach ‘self defense’.
In the following video Navy SEAL Jocko Willink breaks down what he feels is the best method for self defense.
“First and foremost, if you’re talking about true self defense to protect yourself, it’s a gun and it’s concealed carry.”
But what if this isn’t a viable option for yourself? Jocko also addresses which martial art he feels is the most effective for self defense.

“The first thing you start off with is Brazilian JiuJitsu because it’s going to teach you how to handle yourself when a combative situation gets into a grappling scenario.”

Brazilian Jiu Jitsuis a martial art, combat sport system that focuses on grappling with a specialty in ground fighting. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and choke holds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments. However it can be used in some self-defense situations and does serve its purpose.[Source: Wiki]
