Jason Wilson, the founder and head instructor of the Cave of Adullam Transformational Training Academy (CATTA) in Detroit, teach a father and son about working through physical and emotional barriers.

A powerful video begins with a young man practicing front punches, with a board holder standing ready. After several punches, the board is raised.

The young man fails to break the board.

One more air punch, and again, the board does not break.

“you’re pulling,” says Mr. Wilson. “Punch all the way through. When you feel the pain, go all the way through. That could be a barrier in life or anything.

Punch HARDER!”

Again the young man fails.

“you’re not punching hard enough,” said the teacher. “Punch through it. You feel pain?”

The young man responds.

“Yes sir,” he says.

And the instruction continues.

“Let’s go.”

Another air punch, and finally the board breaks. The young man continues to punch, but his spirit is breaking.

“That’s what this is about,” explains the teacher.

The young man is now in tears, and the real teaching begins…

“Congrats to Bruce, our latest recruit to pass his Initiation Test into the Cave of Adullam Transformational Training Academy,” wrote Mr. Wilson. “We decided to share this part of his Initiation Test to encourage all of you to not only allow your sons to cry when facing emotional stress, but more importantly, patiently walk them through it.

“During these perverse times, it’s truly vital that we, the men and fathers of this generation, do not allow our boys to grow up with a false sense of masculinity like many of us did. As a result, we have a mass amount of emotionally unstable men walking in unresolved anger, confusion and depression, instead of power, love and discipline. So we place strong emphasis on allowing our recruits to openly express their emotions, so that we can teach them how to use those emotions to their benefit, and become a comprehensive man of God.”
