The video is terrifying, and instantly makes anyone with a background in martial arts, combatives, or combat sports wonder how they would have reacted. A crazed man can be seen with a pipe, and then two pipes, on a rampage, attacking passersby at random.

The incident took place at the 16th St. Mall in Denver, Colorado.

Seeley was homeless, and said he had moved to Colorado from Indiana approximately a week or two beforehand, in order to use medical marijuana to treat his schizophrenia. Now he has claimed self-defense in the rampage, arguing that he was reacting to someone with a knife. No other weapons are seen on the video. No other arrests were made.

The pipes were PVC, lessening the damage. One victim suffered a head laceration from the assault, but declined to press charges.

The judge set Clarence Seeley’s bond at $150,000, ordered him to wear a GPS monitoring device, and required him to stay away from the 16th Street Mall.

Seeley, 32, has been arrested every year since 2002, a total of some 20 times, with up to six arrests in a single year. Past charges for battery, burglary, theft, and resisting arrest have kept him in and out of jail regularly.

Both Seeley and his father are well-known for committing crimes in Fayette County Indiana. The elder Seeley, 59, is currently serving a long sentence for drug dealing. He has also done time for battery, theft and burglary.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said that the legal marijuana industry in Colorado was not without negative effects, including transients coming to the area for access to marijuana.

“I don’t think this is an indictment on the industry,” added Hancock quickly.

And the question remains – if you were walking at the mall and a man attacked you with two pipes, what would you do?
