Bare knuckle boxing is a big part of Irish traveler (gypsy) culture and is used as a way to settle disputes between feuding individuals or sometimes entire families. There is actually a lot of tradition involved and though it may seem barbaric to some, many contests end in a handshake.

Bare knuckle boxing can also be considered a martial art of it’s own in a lot of ways too. Since they don’t wear the big padded 16oz gloves that regular boxers do, they can’t use the same type of guard as the punches can slip through quite easily. So defensively instead of simply blocking punches you have to either move out of the way or try to parry the incoming blows to avoid taking damage.

The quality of fighters can vary quite wildly though in this world of gypsy bare knuckle boxing. Some fighters can very well go on to compete in professional boxing, just look at current heavyweight champion Tyson Fury who had his start in this world. Other fighters are quite lacking in the skill department though and since there is no real sanctioning body, mismatches happen quite frequently and can end brutally.

In this bare knuckle fight, both fighters are quite cautious to start out but the action really picks up about halfway into the video. Early on, we see a lot of movement and the two pugilists look to trade jabs and counter. A notable reach advantage is possessed by the taller shirtless man making outside fighting not the best strategy for his opponent.

Two minutes into the video thing start to get crazy though as the taller man unloads a viscous combination. He shows good killer instinct too by staying on his hurt opponent and continues to land a plethora of punches to both the body and head.

The discrepancy in skill becomes quite apparent now that he has his opponent figured out. He finishes him off shortly thereafter with another impressive rapid fire combo that sends his opponent hurling to the pavement.
