An episode of ‘Cops’ that showed a police officer using Jiu-Jitsu to subdue a larger man has been analyzed in detail by Rener and Ryron Gracie for their ‘Gracie Breakdown’ video series.
The incident occurred when a homeless man attempted to resist arrested, resulting in a frantic struggle in the middle of a car park in Las Vegas.
The suspect initially tried to run away, but the officer managed to get him in a rear clinch and take him to the ground.
The officer knew Jiu-Jitsu, which was just as well as not only was the suspect bigger than him, but it later emerged he had also been an amateur wrestler in high-school.

Staying tight to the perp, the officer managed to pass to full mount and even grapevined his legs at one point for extra control.
However, when he attempted to use his radio to call for backup the suspect almost managed to reverse him, though the officer showed good hip control to prevent that and stayed on top.
He then rained down a few blows, which distracted the troublemaker for long enough for him to get out his taser and use that in an attempt to subdue him.
Finally police backup arrived and they rushed over to help the officer cuff the suspect.
In their video, Rener and Ryron break down the key aspects of the altercation and then explain how things could have gone badly wrong if the officer hadn’t known how to use jiu jitsu to gain the upper hand in the struggle.

The Gracie brothers are the perfect people to discuss this situation as not only are they part of the third generation of the most famous family in all of jiu-jitsu, but as the head instructors at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy they have also been directly involved in helping teach law enforcement officers how to defend themselves over the years.
