This classic style vs style match takes place in what looks to be a wrestling room which is not a karatekas natural environment but he looks to be pretty comfortable early on in this YouTube fight video, lighting up his opponent with clean effective striking technique and movement. In particular his leg kicks look to be quite good perhaps has some some muay thai in his background as well.
The wrestler, on the other hand, possesses very rudimentary striking skills, having to be reminded by bystanders to “keep his hands up.” He eventually shoots in for a double leg and slams the karate practitioner down pretty hard. He ends up in side control but the karate kid has him in a headlock. The karateka then gets to half guard – a better position to be in on the bottom, and from there grabs a leg and surprisingly taps out his opponent rather quickly.

It’s tough to see exactly what submission hold he tapped him out with as there is someone blocking the way but I’m guessing a knee bar?
He is given a round of applause by those watching and then respectfully goes over to his opponent and helps him back to his feet. That’s one aspect of karate and martial arts that is often forgotten – the respect aspect.
In this case however it really wasn’t his karate that won him this one. It was his jiu-jitsu knowledge. He knew enough that he didn’t panic on the ground. Having a wrestler take you down hard like that and be in side control is a tough spot to be in. He got back to half guard though and managed to grab hold of a leg and knew how to finish the fight from that position.
