Brazilian jiu-jitsu is one of the most practical, if not THE most practical and effective martial art out there. It is of course a grappling based martial art which focuses on using leverage and technique to defeat opponents of all shapes and sizes.

However, when it comes to zombie apocalypse scenarios, there are some very important things to keep in mind when battling the undead with jiu-jitsu techniques.

This humorous and entertaining video from jiu-jitsu expert Stephan Kesting shows how you have to slightly adapt your jiu-jitsu when combating flesh eating zombies.

At the start of the video, Stephan points out that many believe that grappling based arts would be ineffective in the improbable event of a zombie outbreak. This seems believable initially as you for sure wouldn’t want to be up close and personal with something that wants to take a chomp out of you.

Stephan admits that many techniques would in fact not be a good idea against zombies. He says that since zombies have very high pain tolerance, joint lock submissions would be useless. And since they are already dead, cutting off the blow flow to their brain with chokes would do no good. In fact, trying to apply many of these submissions puts you in danger of being bitten and we all know what happens after that.

If the worst case scenario occurs though, where you end up on your back, BJJ skills can help. Stephan suggests using an open guard to defend yourself and since you will likely have shoes on there is no danger of your feet getting bitten.

He also suggests using the ‘x-guard’ if you are familiar with it. The main goal here though is always keep the zombies mouth farthest away from you as possible and look to escape.
