An often underutilized strike during situations of hand-to-hand combat is a backhand— also known as a spinning backfist.

Depending on discipline, the strike has different names and variations as far as the method of technique and hand positioning are concerned.

It is often thought to be risky and does not always yield the desired result, as it requires a high level of skill and experience to administer without leaving yourself exposed to a counterattack.

The strike can be utilized alone in some instances, but is usually better thrown at the end of a combination as it is less telegraphed when performed this way.

When utilized with accuracy and competence, the strike not only comes with the element of surprise, but can also generate some serious torque and concussive force— the quick and explosive knockout seen in this street fight video may serve as a reminder.

Here we see a gentleman with a tank top and another with pink shorts squaring off in what appears to be a park of some sort. While the tank top wearing male’s hands are down throughout the action, he looks as though he’s done this before given his general sense of balance and movement. He does his best Anderson Silva impression, slips a couple of punches with his hands down, and then hits the mark with a perfectly placed backhand that separates his adversary from consciousness and finishes the fight.
