A video recently went viral of a man outside a nightclub in Orlando, Florida outgrappling two police officers, and then driving off at an extreme rate of speed. The drivers action appeared to such that the life of the officers and any bystanders was threatened.
Im sum, this was not a joke – it could have been deadly.
Rener Gracie, 3rd degree black belt, head instructor at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy, and co-creator of Gracie University does a Gracie Breakdown of the incident.
“The PERFECT example for why EVERY cop needs jiu-jitsu!” explains Gracie.
Renerm joined by Sam Fernandez and a number of law enforcement officers, explains why so many officers aren’t prepared to effectively control suspects when it comes to a ground fight.
As has long been understood in combat sports, the secret is always in the hips. Control the hips, and the body will follow. Try to control an arm, maybe not so much.
Gracie details how using side control is a must know for LEOs, along with, of course, weapons retention. Immobilizing arms is also referenced.
The control techniques discussed by Rener are part of an update of the instructor course for military and law enforcement professionals developed by his father, UFC co-founder Rorion, to align it with the new Gracie Combatives format and to address suggestions from the field concerning some scenarios not included in the original instruction. The brothers teach the week-long course, renamed Gracie Survival Tactics (GST), to a variety of military and law enforcement organizations. The instruction is the foundation for combatives techniques in many organizations, notably the U.S. Army.
