Former world champion Ricardo Mayorga fights MMA
Worlds will collide on August 26th when undefeated pound for pound boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. fights MMA mega star Conor McGregor in a boxing match in what will surely be one of the biggest fights of all time.
In this video though, we see it go the other way as former two-weight WBC and WBA boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga tries his hand at MMA competition instead.
This MMA fight took place on October 12, 2013, in San José, Costa Rica in the main event slot at CRF 6: Center Real Fights.
His opponent for this bout was 1-1 MMA fighter Sergio Ortiz and for Mayorga, this was his third total MMA fight. He originally won his first fight by TKO against Wesley Tiffer but it was later overturned and changed to a no-contest due to an illegal blow. His second fight was against street fighter turned MMA fighter Rene 'Level' Martinez which Mayorga lost by a guillotine choke in the first round.
When compared to other high-level boxers who have tried to make the transition (e.g. James Toney) Mayorga didn't do all that bad here considering. He landed some decent shots and showed some improvement in the grappling department.
Still, though, it wasn't enough to get the job done as Sergio Ortiz was able to outwork Mayorga and ended up getting the split decision victory.
The pair would end up having a rematch a couple months after but that time Ortiz was able to seal the deal and finish Mayorga with an armbar. Mayorga's final MMA record is 0-3 with 1 no contest.
