Michael Kerr, 25, of Lexington, Kentucky, was served three Jack Daniels whiskeys on a one-hour American Airlines flight 5039 from his hometown to Charlotte, North Carolina. It is unknown if he had been drinking previously as well.

When the flight touched down he was over eager to disembark. Maybe he wanted to drink more? As the plane taxied to a gate at Charlotte Douglas International, Kerr ignored flight crew orders and got out of his seat.

When an attendant tried to intercede in a professional manner, Kerr got worse.

“Move, move, move,” said the drunken Kerr, as a flight attendant and the pilot blocked him from leaving.

“Take a seat,” said the pilot. “I said take a seat, sir.”

Kerr told the pilot he didn’t want to.

“I don’t care what you want to do,” explained the pilot. “You’re going to take a seat right now.”

According to an FBI affidavit, Kerr cursed and spat at the flight crew, kicked a cabin attendant in the leg, threatened a broken jaw, and when he shoved one to the ground, the pilot had had enough.

He put a half nelson on the dangerous, belligerent idiot, and drove him to the floor.

“Sit down,” said the pilot, narrating the action. “SIT DOWN. That’s enough. You DON”T PUT YOUR HANDS on my flight attendant. ENOUGH.”

The drunk suddenly realized the gravity of his situation.

Yup,” he said. “Yup.”

The pilot and co-pilot used a seat belt strap to restrain Kerr’s legs and keep him from kicking. When Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrived, Kerr was handcuffed, but still kept kicking, requiring more police officers to be called to the scene to safely remove him from the plane.

Kerr faces multiple charges including being intoxicated and disruptive, assault on a female, communicating threats, and interfering with the duties of a flight crew or attendant.

He was also fired from his job as a cook.

Portofino has nothing to do with him anymore,” said managing partner Robert Carter. “He’s done with my company as far as I’m concerned. We haven’t heard from him. … I’m guessing he’s embarrassed.”

This type of criminal misbehavior will get you thrown out of a bar. The consequences are far more serious on a commercial flight.

It is a criminal offense to refuse to obey crew instructions/requests. Attacking any member of the crew in any manner is an assault, and will lead to the perpetrator being removed from the plane in handcuffs. Further, it is not permitted to board an aircraft while intoxicated.

Criminal behavior can lead to being placed on a blacklist preventing the subject from being allowed on any aircraft.

So don’t be like Mike Kerr. And when faced by the Mark Kerr’s of the world, a little wrestling can go a long way.
