Current US President Donald Trump is known to hold his handshakes for way too long and though that is most likely just an awkward moment for photo ops and not an act of aggression, some people out there can use a hand shake as a grip to attack you.
Hand shakes are a symbol of peace and friendship so for someone to use that as a starting point to further harm you is so not cool. There are a variety of ways they can go about it too. They can squeeze down really hard to try to injure your hand which is a common move for bully types. Or they can use the grip on your hand to pull you in.
In this video from the Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy’s YouTube channel, we learn the defense to an aggressive handshake and it is rather simple and straightforward.

Instead of resisting when someone is trying to pull you in during a handshake, you don’t meet force with force and instead you go with it and use technique.
From there you simply wrap your arm around your aggressor’s elbow and at the same time you bend his wrist resulting in what is called a ‘goose neck’ which like the instructor says is a pretty gnarly wrist lock.
Wrist locks, while many people think they are just ineffective Steven Seagal aikido techniques, can actually be used in jiu-jitsu if the right kind of technique is employed. Wrist locks have a lot of self-defense potential as well as they often start out with somebody grabbing you, either by your clothing or your hand/arm like we see here in this video from the Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy.
