Groin kicks, while being illegal in MMA competition, can be used in street or self-defense altercations and they can really cause a lot of damage. We’ve all seen MMA fights where a fighter is lightly grazed in that area and it still hurts them a lot. Plus, they are wearing cups!

Outside the MMA ring this is still seen as a pretty classless, dirty maneuver. However, someone who is going to attack you on the street is obviously not too concerned with class so it is something you still have to watch out for. Obviously, it is important to point out that fighting in the street is something that should be avoided at all costs and you should only fight in self-defense situations when running away is not an option.

Another important point to consider is that with modern MMA training, while it is definitely still highly effective self-defense, it may be lacking when it comes to groin attack defense as like previously stated it is considered a foul in MMA competition.

That’s why this video from martial arts channel ‘fightTIPS’ about how to defend against a groin kick could come in handy.

First Shane breaks down how a groin kick is thrown, as to fully understand the defense of a technique it is important to know the offense as well.

When they go over the defense from distance, Shane explains that simply bringing your hips back is all you have to do to avoid the groin kick.

In close when someone is trying to knee your groin, you can bring up your shin across both of your attackers legs to block the incoming strike and from there look to either restrain your attacker or escape to safety.
