Hockey is a rough sport to say the least that produces some tough people. It is the one of the few sports where it is not only okay to assault someone else, but it is often encouraged.

‘Hockey fighting’ is a distinctive style of combat that involves grabbing someones shirt to control them then wailing on them. While crude and sloppy, it can be an effective way to overwhelm an unskilled or untrained opponent and dispatch them quickly.

Growing up in northern latitudes where hockey is popular, this type of fighting occurs on the street as well and can be difficult to deal with. It is important to note the disclaimer in the video description which states:

“Disclaimer: This video and all associated materials is for entertainment purposes only. The creators and do not take any responsibility for actions or inaction made by the viewer based on the material presented or referred to in this video.”

As the video states, the most difficult thing to overcome in this type of attack is the fact you are being controlled and hit at the same time. The first thing you do is cover whichever side of your head is being attacked with the half shell.

The next thing you want to do is get as close to them as possible to grab a hold of your attacker. This gives you many options and in a self-defense scenario you want all the options you can get.

The instructor in the video demonstrates a throwing technique you can use to take your opponent to the ground. From there you can look to finish from top position.

The last scenario seems to be the most effective. The instructor demonstrates a way to change levels and go underneath the attackers arm to take his back. Once you have his back there is a lot you can do as now you have the superior position.
