Mauritius, a volcanic island nation in the Indian Ocean, is known for its beaches, lagoons and reefs, plus varied flora and fauna, with many species endemic to the island. The people, who number over 1,000,000, are multiethnic, multi-religious, multicultural, and multilingual. The island’s government is highly ranked for democracy and for economic and political freedom.
It is paradise to many. But there are also people on the Island, and where there are people, sometimes crazy things happen. It’s who we are.
There is a long-proven saying about knife beats fists, sword beats knife, and gun beats sword. For confirmation, check the Cairo Swordsman scene in the documentary Raiders of the Lost Ark.
However, one brave soul in Muaritius didn’t get the memo.
The incident happened on August 17, by the Trou-Fanfaron harbor, in the capital of Port Louis. The video opens with two men standing in the middle of a driving lane, taking each other’s measure. One has a box cutter. An angry man with a box cutter is scary. But the other man has a knife held Psycho stabber like, AND a gigantic hooked machete.
To the great battles of Sperm Whales vs. Giant Squid, Edison vs. Tesla, Coke vs. Pepsi, and life vs. comets, let us now introduce Machete Man vs. Box Cutter.
Suddenly Machete Man takes a gigantic swing, as Box Cutter leaps back.
Vehicles are driving past obscuring the camera, but Machete Man is advancing, and takes two more giant swings. The pair come to grips and …
… a large white truck rolls in front of the camera.
When the truck moves on, Machete Man has Box Cutter in a headlock; the weapons can be seen strewn around their feet.
There is a long held belief in Jiu-Jitsu that 90% of fights go to the ground, with the statistics coming from the FBI, or the LAPD, or the back of an ad for instructional videos on how to fight on the ground. However, it appears that machete fights go to the ground too, as Machete Man gets the takedown!
At this moment a policeman mounted on a motorcycle slowly drives past, taking in the action. Just two guys fighting on the ground with with bladed weapons everywhere, nothing to take seriously.
Neither combatant shows much familiarity with ground fighting, and eventually Machete Man stands back up and quickly retrieves his machete AND his knife.
In the end, Box Cutter grabs HIS blade, and the pair go on their way, with no one much the worse for wear.
And in all seriousness, Mauritius is an amazing country full of amazing people, plus these two. And even Machete Man and Box Cutter were amazing, in their own way.
