The stereotype is that middle aged Chinese women practice Tai Chi for exercise.
The reality is that square dancing is a more likely means to staying in shape, but one villager in southeast China’s Fujian province is smashing cliche’s with nunchucks.
The video of Ms. Lei practicing and demonstrating recently surfaced on Weibo, the largest social network in China. It has since gone viral.
“It’s Bruce Lee’s long lost sister!” wrote one viewer.
Bruce Lee’s sister’s real name is Ms. Lei, and on the video she can be seen demonstrating a series of increasingly difficult stunts.
She begins with a demonstration of quick and fluid striking techniques, in front of a modest family home, with grandpa sitting on the porch next to a stack of firewood. The scene then moves to a more urban center, where it becomes clear that Bruce Lee’s sister is also training other women in the village in the way of the nunchaku. The trio can be seen demonstrating with admirable precision.
Next up, breaking a cucumber with a nunchuck. Okay, that one is not so difficult. Then things get way harder.
Ms. Lei does a William Tell with one of her students, while blindfolded.

Grandpa is now joined by grandma on the porch by the firewood, and they both clap proudly.
In a further demonstration of accuracy, Ms, Lei snuffs out 10 candles with a single swing. Happy birthday, kid! The nunchuck can take flame away, and it can bring flame. Lastly, Bruce Lee’s sister lights a match with a careful swing.

The nunchuck is an Okinawan weapon, not Chinese, but Ms. Lei, perhaps inspired by Chinese American actor Bruce Lee, use it is stereotype smashing effect.
