According to an eyewitness at the scene, a belligerent bully showed up at the ‘Studio’ club in Durham, England where he was refused entry because it was a ‘students only’ night. Rather than going on his way, the troublemaker started harassing other people outside the club. He even threatened the doormen, threatened and a woman taking the entry-fees at the door, and was also alleged to have attempted to head-butt an unidentified individual.

He was asked to move on several times by the bouncers, but wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer, and kept coming back. Even the bully’s own friend was unable to convince him to leave; that’s where the video footage begins, as the thug starts to become aggressive towards his companion.

What Happened

One of the doormen moves in to decisively defuse this ticking time bomb, wrapping his arm under the thug’s chin from behind, as if looking for a standing rear-naked choke. However, the security man then tosses the drunken troublemaker to the sidewalk. The bouncer then leaves the bully in no doubt that his unruly behavior won’t be tolerated any longer.

While pinning him the ground the doorman menacingly asks, Are you going to f*** off? Are you going to f*** off, or I’ll pull your f***ing head off? The hoodlum can only flail his arms around helplessly.

Despite appearing furious, the bouncer in fact shows considerable restraint by not hitting the man, despite repeated provocations. Seconds later the bouncer hoists the man up nearly as suddenly as he took him down, and offers a simple command: Up and f*** off.

There’s a moment when it looks like the troublemaker might kick off again, to which the bouncer asks, Are you going down again?

Despite the thug’s bravado, it appears he isn’t keen on a repeat performance of his impromptu trip to the concrete, and so his friend is then able to move him away from the scene and he staggers off into the night with only his pride hurt.

The Lesson

Despite media stereotypes of bouncers as massive, violence-prone thugs, a central aspect of the job is self-control. Any regular person would have let the belligerent have it, but that’s not what happened.

As it turned out, the combination of firm attitude, conditioning, and grappling was more than enough for this potentially violent moment to be wound down. Nobody was hurt, the threat posed by the bully was defused, and he left the scene without further incident. This is the ideal outcome.

So if you want to capable, maximize your conditioning, learn to wrestle, and keep a cool head.
