When it comes to defeating larger opponents, not all martial arts are created equally. Though many martial arts movies would have you believe the best way to beat larger foes is with striking it is actually with grappling where your best chances lay.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (also known as Gracie jiu-jitsu) in particular is an excellent martial art for defeating larger opponents. This is because it emphasizes on using leverage and technique to defeat opponents, not brute force.

Much like UFC 1 where we saw Royce Gracie defeat way bigger opponents, in this YouTube video we see a BJJ purple belt taking on a much larger boxer in a challenge match and he makes it look pretty easy.

Though the boxer has a lot of size and reach on his opponent he is unable to do anything with it. On the ground, particularly on your back, all that size does not help you and in fact may hurt you in terms of mobility (getting back to your feet).

It is also quite obvious that the boxer has zero knowledge of grappling. He does not know how to defend himself properly on the ground nor improve his position. Though the BJJ practitioner in this challenge match is not black belt level he is able dominate this much larger man quite easily.

The fight ends shortly after the BJJ player takes the mount position from side control. His opponent made the mistake of giving up his back however in an attempt to escape. The BJJ practitioner is then able to lock up the rear naked choke which forces the boxer to quickly tap out around the three minute mark of the match.

Though the boxer had a massive size advantage, his lack of grappling skills led to him being dominated by a much smaller man.
