In a real life self-defense situation, using whatever is at your disposal can help keep you safe and potentially save your life.

In this video from self-defense expert and former bouncer Nick Drossos, he alongside Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt Micheal Zegna demonstrate a pretty simple way to choke someone out using their own jacket.

This simple and effective technique involves grabbing the collar of someone’s jacket with one hand then grabbing their shoulder with another. You then squeeze both arms together like a pair of scissors and push it in which tightens around their carotid artery, forcing them to tap out or black out.

Using clothing and lapel chokes to choke or submit someone is pretty common in martial arts like BJJ or judo when using the gi. The great thing about techniques like this it is easily translates to the street and self-defense where the vast majority of people are wearing jackets or some sort of clothing which you can manipulate like we see in this video.

It is important to point out though that this a potentially a dangerous technique and should only be attempted by trained martial artists under the supervision of a qualified instructor and never tried at home.
