Nowadays probably due to the popularity of the hipster subculture, a lot of guys out there have long, straggly bears. Much like gripping your opponent’s clothing both in BJJ and on the street, it is very possible to use someones beard as a grip in a self-defense situation and perhaps even rip it off.
In this video, self-defense expert and former bouncer Nick Drossos shows us how to use someone’s long, straggly beard to your advantage in a self-defense scenario, and perhaps even rip it off.
Now this is a pretty brutal, dirty maneuver as you are probably going to rip off some skin as well and should only be used in the most dire self-defense scenarios.

Nick explains that he used this same strategy effectively during his time as a bouncer and it can be used in a variety of ways including as a way to control your opponent’s head and as Nick says “wherever the head goes, the body will follow.”
You can also use the beard grip as a way to crank someone’s neck into submission as well as simply a grip to then use to land strikes in close proximity such as elbows and punches.
