John Hackleman is an American martial artist and the head trainer at The Pit mixed martial arts gym. He is the coach of UFC legend Chuck Liddell and Glover Texeira.

In 1985, Hackleman moved from Hawaii to California and renamed his martial arts style to Hawaiian Kempo. The Pit is the only Hawaiian Kempo school that uses the Ke-m-po spelling, instead of the more commonly used Ke-n-po. Hackleman describes his style as more hardcore than other Hawaiian Kenpo schools. He gave school the style name KuZen, a word derived from mix Ku, the Hawaiian god of war, and Zen, for Zen Buddhism. This name was intended to attract children and families to his school.
In this video, Hackleman talks about 5 self defense techniques that will get you killed in a street fight. These 5 common and popular self-defense techniques have been around for a long time, and have basically slipped through the cracks… they are dangerous and could get you killed.
Wrist locks.
Wrist locks don’t work. If you put a wrist lock on someone, they’re going to pinch you with the other hand. Wrist locks are for Police to use as a compliance move when there’s other police around. They’re not made for the street. If you have a 95 pound nurse and a 200 pound man is trying to punch her in the face, she’s never going to use a wrist lock. Most Aikido are not made for the street…
Using your opponent’s weight against them
Catching someone’s strike in mid air and flowing them with their force, is not going to happen. The only way to beat violent people is to get more violent than them. You have to use force. You have to use your strength against them.
Blocks
When’s the last time you saw a UFC fighter using a block? You’ll never win by being defensive. You might block one but you won’t block the second or third. You need to get more violent than they are. Blocking doesn’t work. You can be evasive but trying to block will get get you knocked out.
Groin kicks
If they land it then it’s ok but trying to attack someone by kicking them in the balls is going to get you killed. If someone is striking you and you are just trying to kick them in the balls, it will get you put in a coma.
Clinching
If you are a BJJ black belt, Wrestler, or Judoka, then you may be able to clinch your way out of a fight. In any type of clinching where you don’t know the circumstances and if that person has friends, has a knife. You want to create distance not bring them into you. If you clinch for clinching sake, you might get stabbed.
