From what we can piece together, this fight looks like it took place at a Ganryujima Tournament in Japan. This video is for the “just bleed” caliber MMA fan, you know who you are, and we appreciate your frequent visits.
Now chances are if you’re still reading, you haven’t heard of the Ganryujima Tournament. At this point, every time you see the word Ganryujima written on this page, you’ve stopped trying to pronounce it and just silently read it to yourself as “ganra-whatever” and move on. Well this G-word tournament has some pretty interesting rules. Although it’s technically a “mixed martial arts” tournament, since they allow all types of standing strikes, they don’t allow any chokes on the ground and only “standing grappling” is permitted.
So from what I’ve read, they’ve held three of these events now, and it looks like this video is from the most recent one. In this fight, Marcus Aurelio, a UFC and Pride vet, takes on (according to the video poster’s description,) a sumo practicioner. Now I haven’t been able to confirm that Aurelio’s opponent was a sumo fighter, and the way he gets tossed out of the ring within seconds seems to say otherwise. Oh, I guess I should mention that in the G-unit tournament you can also win by pushing your opponent out of the ring 3 times in a round. It appears to be a solid strategy, since Aurelio pulled it off once within about ten seconds of the opening bell. Once the fight is restarted, it looks like Aurelio decides that pushing a sumo fighter around might be too much work and opts to just send his opponent into dream land with a beautiful capoeira kick. Sure that was impressive, but that celebration though!
