Conor McGregor holds the UFC featherweight (145 lbs.) and had planned to fight UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos on Saturday, with the intention of becoming the first man to hold two UFC belts simultaneously (BJ Penn and Randy Couture have held belts in two weight divisions, but not at the same time).

However, RDA broke his foot and pulled out, with lightweight Nate Diaz stepping up on barely a week’s notice. McGregor requested that the fight be at welterweight, and Diaz agreed. Now McGregor said that he plans to beat Diaz and then fight Robbie Lawler for the 170 title.

UFC president Dana White indicated that that was a fight the league could make. However, on Friday at the EA UFC 2 video game press event, White sad that McGregor’s time at 145 could be over, should he beat Diaz Saturday night.

I think if he wins impressively tomorrow he doesn’t even go back to 145 – that’s what I think, said White to Mike Bohn for MMAjunkie. That weight cut is horrible for him. He looks terrible. I’m sure he feels terrible. I think he stays at 170 if he wins tomorrow.

White said he would not allow McGregor to indefinitely hold the 145 belt if he does not plan to defend it, and believes the Irishman would be fine with that.

That would be a non-issue if he wasn’t going to go back, said White. When you’re dealing with Conor McGregor, he’s a smart guy. He gets business. He’s not unreasonable about anything, and he will fight anybody, anywhere, anytime. How could anybody have a problem with that?

When you’re dealing with super-talented people, they’re always going to be quirky and different in their own ways, but no matter what you are, when you act and fight and will step up for anything the way Conor does, you can’t deny the kid.

White added that the discussion was purely theoretical, and that the pair have not discussed it yet.

We’ve had no conversation, White said.

A comparison image of happy Conor weighing in Friday, and sad McGregor weighing 145 shows a dramatic difference.
