The main event of UFC on FOX 22 in Sacramento, CA featured a women’s strawweight fight between Paige VanZant and Michelle Waterson.

Waterson, a JacksonWink competitor and former Invicta atomweight champ, was out more than a year due to multiple hand injuries. But she showed little sign of ring rust, as she stalked VanZant, popper her with a punch, and scored a terrific throw.

From there, Waterson transitioned into the choke. VanZant is known for her toughness and fought it off like a pro, but as her faced turned red and then purple, referee John McCarthy stepped in and waved the fight off.

She’s known for that, Waterson said. I wanted to see if I could throw her, we worked really hard on chain submissions and just going with it when she’s trying to struggle.

Round 1 – Waterson with a side kick to open. Her hands are high. VanZant very busy on the outside. Waterson more stationary and again uses the side kick. Waterson lands a right hand and then pulls away when VanZant tries to clinch. Waterson again with the jab. VanZant gets inside, and they battle in the clinch. Waterson pushes the action to the fence. They trade knees. Beautiful throw from Waterson, and she moves immediately to the back. Bodylock is in, and Waterson looking for the choke. the left arm is under the neck, but VanZant controls the right arm and peels it away. Waterson continues to squeeze. She finally gets the right arm in place. The squeeze continues, and VanZant is out.
