UFC 265 opened with a bantamweight matchup between KOTC veteran Johnny Muhoz, Jr. and Jamey Simmons. Munoz, Jr. was a solid betting favorite heading into the bout, and he proved why when he got the Milwaukee native to tap out in the second round.

The first round between the UFC one-fight veterans consisted of Simmons pushing the action and looking to land a big shot. Both were moderately active through the round, but nothing major landed from either man. However, late in the round “Kid Kvenbo” scored a takedown. That must have shown him something because he didn’t waste any time in doing the same early in the next round.

In the first minute of the second frame, Munoz, Jr. scored a takedown, and on the mat, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and the multi-time champion was a handful for Simmons. To try and get back up, “The Afro Samurai” gave up his back in the hope of getting to his knees and standing up. That didn’t work as Munoz, Jr. stayed there until he would eventually lock in a fight-ending rear-naked choke with 2:25 left in the round.
The victory was the 28-year-olds first in the UFC after losing his promotional debut a year ago. It was also his fourth win by RNC.
For Simmons, he now moves to 0-2 in the Octagon after entering the organization on the heels of a three-fight win streak. It’s also the third time he’s been submitted in five career losses.
