Nate Diaz has long been among the most favorite fighters with the hardcore MMA fanbase – in a sport that markets itself as being “as real as it gets,” Nate Diaz really is as real as it gets. However, if ever there was a question, UFC boss Dana White now feels the same way too.
After Diaz beat up Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 196 Saturday night, White said a title shot at UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler makes sense. Before this fight, Diaz was ranked #5, at lightweight. Diaz hasn’t fought at welterweight since losing a unanimous decision five years ago.
“You know what would make a lot of sense? This isn’t the fight I’m making (now), I’m just saying, him and Robbie Lawler make a lot of sense,” said White tol ESPN following the event, as transcribed by Anton Tabuena for BE. “His brother beat Robbie, who is now the world champion, and Nate became very very popular tonight.”
“We’ll see what happens, but for me to predict what one of the Diaz brothers are going to do, who knows?” said White said with a friendly laugh.
White speculated further about what Diaz may do with his $500,000 purse, two $50,000 performance bonuses, and who knows what all else.
“We might never see him again,” said White, again in jest, as transcribed by Andre Vergara for FOX Sports. “He made so much money tonight, you might never see Nate Diaz again. Somebody asked him ‘What are you going to do with your money?’ He said ‘I’m buying a yacht.’”
As the hardcore fMMA anbase will attest, rather than sitting on a yacht named “209 Motherf***ers” surrounded by babes and gazelles, Diaz will in all likelihood very shortly be back in the gym, training hard. Probably back training for a triathlon, too. That is who he is, and is one more part of why he has so many fans among people who love the sport the most.
