UFC 272 will be the MMA world leaders pay-per-view offering for the month of March, and it is set to be led by a bitter rivalry between a couple of welterweight elites.
In the night’s headliner, former besties turned bitter rivals Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington will face off in a battle of respect between two top-10 welterweights. Both men have fought for the division’s title twice each, losing to current welterweight king Kamaru Usman on all four occasions.
Masvidal and Covington were once close friends and even roommates before their bond dissolved after “Chaos” grew his fame partially off his reputation for bold and controversial statements.

The friends-turned-enemies fight that the MMA world has wanted for several years is finally here. Covington versus Masvidal will compete over five rounds to settle the score once and for all in one of the most unique relationships in MMA history. They were former teammates and close friends who became rivals en route to being two of the best welterweights in the world. However, both are well outside the title picture after coming up short in multiple opportunities to dethrone Kamaru Usman. Making this a straight grudge match of the highest order as they look to prove who is the better man and score lifelong bragging rights.
Prediction: Covington by unanimous decision
Edson Barboza (22-10) vs. Bryce Mitchell (14-0)
Ultimate Fighter Season 27 alum Mitchell is one of the fastest rising talents at featherweight. He hasn’t lost many rounds during his first five appearances in the Octagon and has become one of the very best grapplers in the entire division. Barboza will offer his toughest challenge yet in an elite striker who has sound takedown defense. Like many previous Barboza opponents who excel on the ground, Mitchell will need to weather his foes early storm and play the long game to get the fifteenth win of his career. However, if he gets sloppy on the feet he could see his night come to a quick and violent end.
Prediction: Mitchell by submission, round 3
Kevin Holland (22-7) vs Alex Oliveira (22-11-1)
Kevin Holland will make his welterweight debut in a matchup with a fighter who always brings the action to his Octagon scraps. “Cowboy” Oliveira is a perfect foe for a finish-friendly fighter in Holland. Wherever the fight goes it should deliver fireworks. The only drawback is the Brazilian isn’t likely to understand the American’s trademark in-fight trash talk. But that could end up entertaining in its own way as well.
Prediction: Holland by TKO, round 3
