At UFC 90, Randy ended his legal exodus from the UFC and returned to defend his title against the up and coming behemoth that was Brock Lesnar. After a back and forth round one, Lesnar managed to stun Couture and drop him with a right hand, where Lesnar was able to pounce and take the UFC gold home that night.

Though Couture expressed interest in having a rematch with Lesnar it didn’t materialize as Randy eventually moved back to light heavyweight.

After his title unification Lesnar was slated to make his first title defence against fellow powerhouse wrestler Shane Carwin at UFC 110. An opponent that rivalled him in size, strength and wrestling prowess it looked as Lesnar had met his match on paper.

So to help prepare for the bout and get an extra edge he enlisted the help of the man he won the title off of; Randy Couture, bringing the UFC Hall of Famer to the Death Clutch training centre to share his experiences to help elevate the fight camp.

I think what I’m looking for in this experience is one to gain some new perspective, see how some of the other top fighters are training. You might learn new tricks and I think it’s an important part of developing as a fighter. Couture said of the trip.

Lesnar spoke highly of their sessions, noting the improvement it made around the gym. Having Randy Couture in the gym raises the level not only for myself but for my other training partners. Randy’s been around the octagon a few times so there’s little tricks of the trade he can pass along because he’s got the experience. It’s just a great opportunity for the godfather come in here, it’s good for the morale for the camp as we all have big fights coming up.
