Here for your viewing pleasure are 140 of the greatest moments of trash talking in UFC history!

Talking trash is a part of sports, and more broadly, part of human competition. In the sport of mixed martial arts, trash talking is unique because it can occur before, during or after physically hurting or injuring one’s opponent. It’s the only sport in which a competitor can tell his opponent, I’m going to kick your ass and then literally kick his opponent in their ass.

The psychological impact of trash talking varies from fighter to fighter, with some allowing it to stoke the flames of their anger and aggression, and others appearing to barely take notice at all.

The fighter who is affected by his opponent’s verbal barbs puts him or herself in a much more perilous situation than one who simply ignores it in favor of a more cold and intellectual perspective on the battle at hand. The fighter talking trash leaves him or herself open to looking silly if they suffer a shocking loss.

The impact of trash talk is felt not only by the fighters engaging in it, but also among the fans of the sport. Few things build intrigue or interest in a fight quite like an extended trash talking session between a couple of guys who talk the talk as well as walk the walk.

In recent years, those in charge of the Ultimate Fighting Championship have realized that a fighter who promotes him or herself by trash talking their opponent is quite simply more likely to garner attention, stardom, pay-per-view buys and cold hard cash, even going so far as to give fighters like Nick Diaz or Chael Sonnen a title shot despite having lost their previous fights.
