In what remains as the only true Champion vs Champion fight to date, then UFC Welterweight Champion Georges ‘Rush’ St Pierre defended his title against in a rematch against reigning UFC Lightweight Champion BJ ‘The Prodigy’ Penn at UFC 94 on January 31st of 2009.

Over the course of four rounds, St Pierre punished the UFC Lightweight Champion on the feet and on the ground in a one sided affair which prompted a corner stoppage by BJ Penn’s boxing coach Jason Parillo and marking St Pierre’s second title defence.

But the fight was not without controversy, as in between rounds one, two and three one of St-Pierre’s cornerman, Phil Nurse was seen rubbing Vaseline on the back and shoulder of St-Pierre by members of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Though St Pierre and his camp denied any wrongdoing, BJ Penn filed a formal request to the NSAC for an investigation stating that St-Pierre had administered an illegal “greasing” substance on his body which gave him an advantage during the bout.

George St Pierre subsequently made an appearance on Sportsnet Canada to discuss the controversy and made a shocking admission that he did cheat…but not in the way people expected.

I did cheat but not in a way people think. I hired a man to kiss BJ Penn on the mouth on his way to the Octagon. And at that precise moment BJ Penn lost all his strength and all his focus and the fight was mine. Not with the Vaseline but by hiring a man to kiss him in the mouth St Pierre told Showdown Joe in a tongue and cheek response.

In the aftermath of these events this technique has yet to been banned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission or by the US Anti-Doping Agency.
