FightHype.com recently caught up with legendary boxer Roy Jones Jr. to get his thoughts on Ronda Rousey’s recently loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193:
Fight Hype: Ronda Rousey just lost her ‘0’. Sent shockwaves. What you think Roy, can she bounce back? And what did you think about her losing?
Roy Jones Jr: I thought she had the wrong technique going into the fight. You gotta be smart about it. That’s what happens when you get big enough you start underestimating other people. You gotta always respect your opponent and not underestimate them.
I think she [Ronda Rousey] did have much respect for her opponent and I think she underestimated her opponent badly. To me, Ronda Rousey is fighting a girl that you know is a former champion with mad skills moving around and boxing in a boxing ring. So she can be in a ring and be comfortable there for a long time. Whereas Ronda Rousey does not have much boxing experience.
As a matter of fact in her UFC fights, she ended most of them in the first round. So in eleven fights, she may have thirteen rounds. This girl [Holly Holm]’s got thirty eight fights. If she only went one round that’s three times as many rounds as Ronda already. So come, you gotta add up and look at the reality of the situation. If you gonna fight a boxer, you gotta go and try to take her down right away. That’s your only chance. Your not going to outbox her; she got thirty eight pro fights. Are you serious? NO. You don’t go outbox her, you don’t even give her that chance. Why would you do that? It’s like Spudd Webb trying to play one on one with Karem Abdul Jabar. You don’t go down low and try to post Karem up when he’s seven foot. That’s crazy. You asking to lose.
Fight Hype: Can you she come back though Roy?
Roy Jones Jr: Of course she can. She’s just gotta get a better game plan. Ronda’s a best, Ronda’s got a lot of heart, Ronda’s a disciplined person. She’s gotta do a little soul searching, become more respectful of people and the sport. When you respect other people, you respect yourself more…by showing respect. When you don’t respect, when you disrespect other people, you’re really disrespecting yourself first. Because it takes a bad person to not respect other people. So when you respect other people, you give yourself respect first and your giving God respect because he created everybody. So you respect people unless they disrespect you. They disrespect you then you have to disrespect back. If they don’t disrespect you, then why would you disrespect the person? Makes no sense at all.
Second, if she comes with the right idea, the right game plan, of course she can win. But you gotta have the right game plan. You can’t go out there and think your going to outbox a boxer.
