At UFC 196 Miesha Tate rallied from behind with a 5th round rear naked choke submission of Holly Holm and became the new women’s UFC Bantamweight champion of the world.

In what is certainly a case of déjà vu, Miesha Tate looks like she will be set to defend her newly acquired bantamweight title against none other than her rival Ronda Rousey, reminiscent of their title fight held in Strikeforce.

In 2011 after Tate won the Strikeforce 135lb title off of Marloes Coenen with a third round arm triangle choke, she got pencilled in to defend her title on March 3rd 2012 against undefeated prospect; Olympic Judoka Ronda Rousey who had spent barely a minute in the Strikeforce cage with two first round armbar victories.

Though Tate was open to the title bout she didn’t mince words on whether she felt ‘Rowdy’ deserved the shot:

I would have no problem fighting her. My only qualm with her is she is 4-0, 2-0 for Strikeforce. She’s challenging in a weight division she hasn’t competed in yet, and I just don’t think at 4-0, she has earned her title shot. She hasn’t beaten any top contenders in the weight class.

Coming onto the scales ahead of their bout, the rivalry got even more heated as Ronda pushed Miesha away with her head during the stare down before being separated by Scott Coker.

Once the bell rung the defending champion came out swinging only to get taken down by the Judoka repeatedly and eventually got caught in a very gruesome armbar that dislocated her elbow and gave Ronda Rousey the Strikeforce 135lb title.

I don’t feel that bad about it Rousey said post-fight on her arm wrenching submission victory.

Will history repeat itself again in 2016 with ‘Rowdy’ sweeping to 3-0 or will Miesha finally be able to break the losing streak against her arch rival and defend her belt?
