It has been over a year now since the world lost one of hip-hop’s greatest rappers and biggest MMA fans, Sean Price. Before leaving this mortal coil, the Brooklyn, NY lyricist penned a tribute to the man many consider to be the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, Anderson Silva.
The chorus warns the listener, I’m the rap version of Anderson Silva, which Sean Price would have been the first to tell you is simply a grandiose way of saying I’m the best at what I do, just as The Spider had been back in his heyday.
The song serves more than simply a self-aggrandizing purpose, as Price paints the song with more than a few mixed martial arts and combat sports references, as he invoked the names of everyone from Kimbo Slice to boxer and former IBF light welterweight champion Buddy Mcgirt. As with any true artist, Price’s lyrics were very much colored and influenced by his surroundings, his experiences, and the things he loved.
On August 8, 2015, Price died at the age of 43. Details surrounding his death were not immediately available, but a statement from his reps confirmed his death, while adding that he died in his sleep. “It is with beyond a heavy heart that Duck Down Music is sadly confirming that Sean Price passed away early this morning in his Brooklyn apartment, Saturday, August 8th, 2015,” read the statement. “The cause of death is currently unknown, but it was reported that he died in his sleep. He’s survived by his wife, and his three children.”
